Counselor Education Minor

A minor in counseling will introduce you to various fields in the counseling profession, including school counseling; mental health counseling; and marriage, couples, and family counseling.

You will have the opportunity to study under counseling professors who are well known and respected in the profession and have years of experience as counselors in the field. The minor is ideal for students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in counseling or related professions and will introduce you to the numerous career opportunities in the exciting field of counseling.

 

Typical Coursework

The counseling minor encompasses a broad range of courses designed to introduce you to the amazing opportunities within the counseling profession.  The minor program includes five required courses plus your choice of one elective. 

 

The counselor education minor requirements will be changing in Fall 2022. The new minor courses listed below in boldface will be offered beginning in Fall 2022, but your previously taken courses will still count as indicated.

Core Courses (15 Hours)

  • EDCE 210: Career Planning and Development or
    • EDCE 502 - Guidance Techniques for Classroom Teachers (if taken prior to Fall 2022)
  • EDCE 340: Counseling Through a Multicultural Lens: Understanding Self and Others or
    • EDCE 503 - Family Counseling (if taken prior to Fall 2022)
  • EDCE 350: Interpersonal Communication Skills or
    • EDCE 600 - Communications Skills in Counseling (if taken prior to Fall 2022)
  • EDCE 360: Introduction to the Counseling Profession or
    • EDCE 510 - Introduction to Counseling (if taken prior to Fall 2022)
  • EDCE 570 - Seminar in Counseling (no change from previous requirements)

Elective Course (3 Hours) – Select one from:

  • EDFI 300 - Schools In Communities
  • PSYC 301 - Psychology of Marriage
  • PSYC 310 - Psychology of Women
  • SOCY 301 - Sex and Gender
  • SOCY 305 - Sociology of Families
