Happy Summer CoE, 

Unfortunately, June’s ODEI newsletter did not go out as planned. I am happy to report that we are now back on track!  Since we missed June’s newsletter, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the significance of President Joe Biden’s 2021 signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

The dog days of summer are upon us with scorching temperatures, thunderous clouds, drenching rains, and earthquakes! Please stay well hydrated, carry a “big” umbrella, and be safe. Learn more about staying safe during an earthquake.

We have received 8 commitments from our incoming class of ACI students. This will be our first freshman class in 3 yrs.

Also,  ACI scholar Julia Upton is participating in the Ronald E. McNair scholars program this summer.

Features

Fulbright-Hays team visits Nigeria

Professor Boutte sends greetings from her month-long Fulbright Hays Group Study Abroad Project in Nigeria. She is traveling with 13 other educators--five professors; three doctoral students; and five K-12 teachers. The team is focused on African Diaspora Literacy (being literate about people in the African Diaspora ).

They are focusing on connections between Yoruba and African American culture.  All are engaged in curriculum projects which reflects their learning, and which will be implemented in K-20 educational settings in South Carolina.  A book project and several articles will emerge from this project (Project ASA). Stay tuned for more details.

Multiple Perspectives for Teaching About History

One strategy for teaching about history is teaching multiple perspectives. In that spirit, enjoy this short reading of “What to the Slave is 4th of July?” Frederick Douglass’s Historic Speech read by James Earl Jones. (5 1/2 minutes)

Revolutionary Love is now available

Kamania Wynter-Hoyte, Eliza Braden and Michele Myers wrote Revolutionary Love: Creating a Culturally Inclusive Literacy Classroom. Gloria Boutte wrote the foreword.

The book is now available wherever fine books are sold.

CarolinaCAP spurs innovation at SCASA

CarolinaCAP presented at the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) annual Instructional Innovative Ideas Institute on June 21, 2022.

The presentation, CarolinaCAP: Spurring Innovation Through Collaboration, highlighted the impact of personalized learning through micro-credentials, individualized support via trained coaches, and true collaboration on recruitment and retention in SC rural school districts.

LaToya Adams, Ph.D., Director of Human Resources for Williston School District 29, and Tria Grant, CarolinaCAP Director, shared programmatic wins and steps for partnership with session participants. Participants heard testimonials of program support and impact from current CarolinaCAP candidates, students of candidates, and district partners. The session generated interest in district partnership of additional districts across South Carolina.
