Provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
Applicants must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. A multi-country program is eligible only if the applicant will spend at least 8 weeks in one of the countries stated above and will have intensive language study during that period.
Please note the April deadline is for study abroad for all of the 2019-2020 academic year (summer 2019, fall 2019, spring 2020, and academic year).
Also, applicants must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program. The applicant is required to submit the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) figure, calculated through FAFSA, with the statement of financial need through the online Freeman-ASIA application.

Summer awards up to $3000, semester awards up to $5000, and academic year awards up to $7000.

This scholarship provides funding for current recipients of Pell Grants to study or intern abroad. $5,000 for undergraduate study up to one year is provided with the potential for additional $3,000 if also studying a critical language.
This program offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Academic-year scholarships consist of a $4,500 cash stipend; semester scholarships consist of a $2,500 cash stipend.
